Would it be a wise move for the Brooklyn Nets to guarantee the contract of former Chicago Bulls guard Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot?
Last season was a whirlwind of free agent signings and recalls from the G-League down the stretch for the Chicago Bulls. When head coach Jim Boylen still had the interim tag attached last season, he was mostly dealing with a G-League-level roster down the stretch. The Bulls weren’t very good at any point of their rotation.
Most of the players that the Bulls kept on their NBA roster last season that didn’t really have enough merit to be on any 15-man roster in the league are now out of the Windy City. That list includes the likes of point guard Walt Lemon Jr., guard/wing Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, and combo guard Antonio Blakeney.
This season, Lemon Jr. floated around different Las Vegas NBA Summer League and G-League teams and Blakeney found himself playing overseas once the Bulls waived him. Lemon was with the Bulls Summer League team for a brief stint, but didn’t even make it all the way through Training Camp and the preseason on the team’s roster.
The only of those three aforementioned former Bulls players that is still looking to solidify a spot on an NBA roster this season is Luwawu-Cabarrot. The 24-year-old guard is trying to rejuvenate his NBA career with the Brooklyn Nets this season. He’s played in 11 games with the Nets so far and is averaging 5.1 points per game, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists, with a 6.6 player efficiency rating.
The Nets will soon be deciding if either Luwawu-Cabarrot or the 25-year-old former Dallas Mavericks first round pick and small forward Justin Anderson will get guaranteed NBA contracts.
Luwawu-Cabarrot signed a two-way contract with the Nets back in October 2019 and is trying to solidify a spot on their NBA roster before the deadline comes for teams to either guarantee or cut players in his situation. Later this month, all 30 NBA teams will have to decide if players like Luwawu-Cabarrot will either be guaranteed for the rest of the season or cut.
The Nets currently sit in the seventh spot in the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference standings. They are more than three games ahead of the Bulls in the playoff race in the East, and still remain ahead of the Orlando Magic (who sit in the eighth spot).
