Darren Collison Free Agency: Chicago Bulls should sign him immediately
Why he could choose the Bulls
The only real path that I would see the Chicago Bulls partaking in to land Collison is trading one of the point guards on their current roster. I already mentioned the idea of trading Dunn if GarPax was confident that they had a chance to sign Collison. Clearing out roster room could also be done by waiving either Ryan Arcidiacono or Shaquille Harrison if the Bulls have a real shot at signing Collison.
The two-way skill set of Collison and veteran savvy would more than replace the value that Dunn brings to the table as mostly a defensive stopper. Dunn is better overall on defense than Collison, but not near as effective or efficient on offense. Collison usually shoots anywhere between 10-20 percent better from beyond the arc in any given season than Dunn.
Moreover, the Bulls still could really use an additional veteran presence in the locker room. It might be appealing to Collison to reunited with a former teammate of his from the Pacers, veteran forward Thaddeus Young, in the Windy City. That could have a positive impact for both Young and Collison since the former seems unhappy with his role this season with the Bulls of late.
Possibly the biggest hurdle to ever signing a big name free agent that would come about in the middle of the regular season like Collison for the Bulls is the unappealing nature of playing for head coach Jim Boylen. As maybe the NBA’s most unpopular head coach, Boylen could hold the Bulls back for a while in trying to attract bigger name free agents to play in the Windy City.
