What Darren Collison brings to the table

It seems like this would be good timing for Collison to make an NBA return, since there’s a number of title contenders that need a veteran point guard that provides services like his skill set does. Collison was a steward of success down the stretch last season with the Pacers. But that Pacers possible playoff run fell short once they lost star shooting guard Victor Oladipo to a season-ending quad injury.

However, Collison was a steady veteran floor general for the Pacers last season that was solid on both ends of the floor. He averaged 11.2 points per game, 6.0 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 steals. Two seasons ago, he was the NBA’s leader in three-point shooting percentage (46.8). Collison once again shot better than 40 percent from beyond the arc last season.

Another impressive stat from Collison last season was an assist rate around 30 percent. His assist rate more than doubled that of his turnover rate (14.4 percent). He’s also posted at least .151 win shares per 48 minutes in each of his last two seasons with the Pacers. As far as a steady veteran point guard like Collison goes, he’s about as much of a stabilizer as any team can have.

Steals and off-ball defense are the main value that he brings on that end of the floor. On offense, Collison can drive when necessary, but his main value comes with his facilitating and outside shooting. He shot around 46 percent from 16-feet from the rim and beyond in each of the last two seasons. The steal rate he posted with the Pacers was also hovering around 2.0-2.5 percent.
