Darren Collison Free Agency: Chicago Bulls should sign him immediately
If it makes sense in the mind of veteran point guard Darren Collison, then the Chicago Bulls should try and sign him immediately.
The rumors emerged on Jan. 1 that the former Indiana Pacers breakthrough veteran point guard Darren Collison might try and make an NBA return this season. That came after Collison surprisingly retired last offseason. Before he had that abrupt retirement over the summer, Collison looked to be a potential free agent target that could fill the veteran point guard need that the Chicago Bulls had.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Collison is apparently looking to make an NBA comeback this season less than a full year after his abrupt retirement. The apparent favorites to sign Collison for his potential February return this season includes the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers.
But if the Bulls could prove in the next month or so that they’re legit playoff contenders for a seven or eight seed in the Eastern Conference, could that draw the interest of Collison to signing to play in the Windy City?
A lot would depend on how big of a point guard need the Bulls have at that point of the regular season. If the Bulls do pull off a big trade deal before the deadline, then a spot might open up on the roster at point guard. A common trade chip that is speculated in possible Bulls trade packages is the 6-foot-4 point guard Kris Dunn.
Trading Dunn might be a good move for John Paxson and Gar Forman up in the Bulls front office if Collison expressed any level of interest in signing with this team. But that is looking four steps ahead of where his possible NBA return is at right now.
Here’s a look into why the Chicago Bulls could sign the 32-year-old point guard Darren Collison and what he would bring to the table with a possible NBA return.
