After the Utah Jazz waived him on Dec. 23, the Chicago Bulls found a nice forward target to pursue in free agency in veteran 33-year-old Jeff Green.

A surprising move followed a the first big trade of the 2019-20 regular season around the NBA. And a team like the Chicago Bulls could be the benefactor after it went down. The trade that occurred saw the Utah Jazz send point guard Dante Exum to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a return of shooting guard Jordan Clarkson. There were also a handful of draft picks exchanged in this trade deal.

What happened after the trade, though, was pretty surprising. The Jazz wound up waiving veteran forward Jeff Green to clear minutes up for Georges Niang and potentially a rotation spot for 6-foot-7 rookie forward Jarrell Brantley (who is currently playing down in the G-League on a two-way contract).

The signing of G-League star forward Rayjon Tucker to a multi-year contract in the NBA also meant that the writing was on the wall for Green.

The first report that the Jazz decided to waive Green as the dust was settling after the Exum-Clarkson trade came from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

This is the time of year where the rumor mill can really heat up around the NBA. All the roster turnover that occurred during the offseason had a lot of players locked in until Dec. 15. But not that deadline passed so NBA teams can have more assets on the table to start trade discussions.

Buyout season is also soon going to be a prominent storyline around the NBA. Green might be the first domino to fall in a number of valuable veterans that are waived this season.

Here’s a look into the three reasons why the Chicago Bulls should try and sign veteran forward Jeff Green now that he is hitting free agency.
