2. Go grab a veteran scorer
The sexiest move that would garner the most attention that not only the Chicago Bulls could make, but any NBA team could, is landing a big name veteran wing. That would involve a name like the former Cleveland Cavaliers LeBron James-sidekick and veteran shooting guard J.R. Smith or the multi-time All-Star and potential Hall-of-Famer Carmelo Anthony.
But there are other names available that would make more sense for the Bulls than signing either Melo or J.R. And if he is over this whole distraction phase on and off the court, which he’s likely not, then Smith makes more sense than Melo. Yet, this should be well outside the point for the Bulls free agency discussion to fill this positional need.
Three veteran wings the Bulls should first reach out to (outside of those currently playing overseas) includes Iman Shumpert, Quincy Pondexter, and Joe Johnson. The Detroit Pistons already parted ways with the reigning BIG3 league MVP Johnson after the preseason slate ran up. But Shumpert and Pondexter haven’t landed anywhere significant yet.
Turning to the most attentive of all the moves the Bulls could make to add a veteran wing would mean signing Smith. Making the most sensical signing could involve either landing a piece like Shumpert or “Iso Joe”. Only time will tell if this is the strategy the front office uses to boost the wing depth.
