Chicago Bulls: 5 Keys To Making Strong Playoff Push in 2019-20

3. More Growth From Our Young Core
When photos surfaced of a buff Lauri Markkanen with 15 pounds of newly added muscle fresh out of offseason training last year, Bulls nation was ready for The Finnisher to take off. Unfortunately setbacks with injuries put a pause one what many hoped would be a breakout year for the young big man.
The same could be said for Wendell Carter Jr., who battled for boards and defended the rim with force despite playing with a core injury over the past several years. Not to mention that nagging thumb sprain that kept him out of the lineup for a lot longer than many would hope.
We all know the Kris Dunn story. Two years ago, he seemed like he could take the team deep into the playoffs with plus offensive play and straight up lethal defense. Last year, things took a turn and now we have a new starting Point Guard in his place.
Let’s not forget Denzel Valentine, the Bulls’ first round draft pick in 2016, who ended up unexpectedly missing the entire 2018-19 season with an injury.
Then there’s rookie Coby White, who flew by defenders with ease and drained some impressively tough shots during the Summer League and preseason.
In order for the Bulls to take their play to the next level, they absolutely need these five young men to take the next step in their game.
We’ve seen flashes of growth this preseason, marked by a strong focus on rebounding and defense from Markannen. Coby White has impressed in ways not often seen with a raw, young rookie, as well.
With consistent playing time under Boylen’s system, and much needed growth from the Bulls’ young core, playoff contention is just a few steps away.
