With just three preseason games remaining before the regular season opener, Chicago Bulls head coach Jim Boylen is still choosing the starting point guard.

Through two preseason games for the Chicago Bulls, it doesn’t appear that any of the point guards on the roster for Training Camp have impressed head coach Jim Boylen enough to earn the starting role. Boylen and the rest of the coaching staff did a nice job spreading around the playing time among the five or six players that could all be vying for time at the one.

However, there are two or three names that come to mind among those who should be the top candidates in mind for the starting point guard spot. None of those apparently stuck out to Boylen yet in two preseason losses.

The first preseason loss for the Bulls came at home at the United Center against the Central Division foe Milwaukee Bucks. The Bulls fell short by the final score of 122-112 in that game. Fourth-year point guard Kris Dunn got the start for the Bulls in the preseason opener.

And the second preseason loss for the Bulls also came at the United Center on Oct. 9 against the upstart New Orleans Pelicans by a measly two-point margin. The bulk of the playing time in that game down the stretch at the one went to rookie Coby White.

Opening night for the Bulls is set to tip off the 2019-20 regular season on Oct. 23 on the road at the Spectrum Center against the Charlotte Hornets. The Bulls will get to make the trek back to face the franchise run by a legend of their team, Michael Jordan. But the Bulls will need to have the starting five against the Hornets in mind at least a couple days out from opening night.

However, the other name that should come to mind as potentially the top candidate to get the starting point guard spot on Oct. 23 against the Hornets for Boylen should be the 6-foot-7 combo guard Tomas Satoransky. While Satoransky didn’t overwhelm his competition in the first two preseason games, he possesses the skill set to run this improved Bulls offense.

Whatever route Boylen chooses could come with scrutiny. And those three aforementioned point guards should still get significant minutes in the rotation in the early part of the regular season. But Joe Cowley reported on the Chicago Sun-Times Twitter page on Oct. 10 that Boylen did want to name a starting point guard “sooner rather than later”.

Next up for the Bulls in the preseason is a road battle against another Central Division foe with the Indiana Pacers at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Bulls will try and rake in the first preseason win under Boylen as the head coach and possibly get one step closer to naming the starting point guard.
