Chicago Bulls fans finally got to hear from their team yesterday at media day. Here are the 3 things I liked the most from the Bulls.
Media day is always fun and always a bit repetitive at the same time. We know the front office is going to come out and say they like the roster they’ve put together in the offseason. We know the coach is going to say he wants to see improvement. We know the players are going to be positive about what they’ve worked on in the summer. It’s a different beast to actually walk the talk.
Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper into what the players, coach and front office are saying to take anything meaningful from media day. Sometimes you have to really look at their body language.
Here are three things that I liked from the Bulls’ media day – things that made me feel confident heading into the season.
3. Setting clear goals
One thing that drives me crazy about media day is how frequently players, coaches or front offices say they all want to improve. Isn’t that everyone’s goal in sports? How many NBA players wake up and think, “You know what, this season I want to get worse.”
Saying you want to improve is just a simple way of not getting people’s hopes up. So let’s not do that anymore. I want each team to set specific goals, and the Chicago Bulls did that yesterday (for the most part).
No matter who was talking, it seemed like the team had a consistent goal across the board: make the playoffs. Not to simply improve or win more games or see more individual development. Everyone in the organization seems to be on the same page as the fans.
This is the year for Chicago to go for the playoffs, and it’s nice to know they’re focused on that and didn’t shy away from expressing it to the public.
