No. 2 Cameron Payne

Point guard Cameron Payne has a found a new home in the NBA, and it’s with the Toronto Raptors.

After his shaky stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers, Payne put together an NBA Summer League performance noteworthy enough to earn a new contract in 2019 free agency. The two-year, $3.7 million deal he signed with the Raptors is partially guaranteed.

The former lottery pick will add another level of depth to the Raptors back court, which already includes Kyle Lowery and Fred VanVleet. As such, it remains unclear how much, if at all, Payne will play. It’s possible he could be cut before his deal with the Raptors becomes fully guaranteed.

Payne has to show consistency in order to continue solidifying his standing in the league and with the Raptors. It’s something that has plagued him during his first four seasons.

What’s interesting is the Raptors are in a unique position heading into the 2019-2020 season. While the organization is coming off a championship-winning season, the Raptors will look to continue competing at a high level, even with the departure of NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard.

It’s not expected that Payne will need to fill the void that is left, but it is hoped that he can provide quality production off the bench when called upon.
