2. The pace that Coby White develops
Chicago Bulls VP of Basketball Operations, John Paxson, was very clear during his post season press conference that the Bulls must upgrade at the point guard position. When Coby White was drafted with the 7th pick of the NBA draft, most observers figured it to be a bad sign for Kris Dunn.
However shortly after, Jim Boylen was very clear that White is not being handed the starting point guard position. Since then, Satoransky was added and now it is not clear to anyone who will be the starter when the season begins.
Most fans back in Chicago assume that Satoransky will start. He is slated to make $30 million over the next three seasons. With that kind of investment, Kris Dunn will really have to impress to get playing time over Satoransky and White.
But as mentioned previously, Dunn likes the ball in his hands. Playing with the second team would allow him to do that and also allow the Bulls a nice change of pace.
Dunn could even be on the court with White at times. That could lesson the defensive burden White may feel when playing against today’s stronger point guards.
Nobody has stated that the Bulls are all in on Coby White as their future point guard. But everybody would be delighted if he played great out of the box. Everybody but Kris Dunn that is.
The development of White will have a tremendous impact on the value the Bulls place on Kris Dunn. If White develops quickly, Dunn may be moved by the trade deadline. If Dunn steps up his game and White struggles, Dunn will have a second chance to solidify a spot in the rotation.
