Chicago Bulls: Resetting final 2019 free agency big board
A legitimate option that could emerge for the Chicago Bulls to fill the void on the wing is the controversial former Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard/small forward and the 6-foot-6 J.R. Smith. The 2016 NBA Champion and 2013 Sixth Man of the Year only played in 11 games last season, and got four starts.
However, the Bulls could really use the 34-year-old wing to fill the void left by Hutchison if he’s actually out for any significant stretch of games this coming season. In his five seasons with the Cavaliers, Smith averaged 12.7 points per game, 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 steals.
There are numerous reasons why a lot of teams would want to stay away from signing Smith. But the Bulls might not be in that position to turn him down. If he has any interest in playing in the Windy City and legitimately wants to contribute to help grow this young and budding core, there’s little reason not to consider signing him.
What would be most valuable to the Bulls is the efficient offensive scoring ability that Smith could bring off the bench. When he’s on, Smith is a good shooter and has solid shot selection while not turning the ball over too much. Finding the more productive version of JR with the Denver Nuggets or New York Knicks that posted around 0.1 win shares per 48 minutes would be the key for the Bulls if he’s signed.
