In this deal, the Bulls and Clippers would both be taking a step closer to what they want to accomplish and would be seen as a win-win.
For Los Angeles, the Clippers would get three young guards in Dunn, Denzel Valentine, and Antonio Blakeney. With the only true point guard on the Clippers’ roster being Patrick Beverley, investing in one is probably the right move for this contending group. Dunn also has a very similar skillset as Beverly: defensive-minded players who do the dirty work from the guard position.
Denzel Valentine would also provide depth and shooting on the wing for the Clippers and is a sleeper to have a big season in 2019-2020. Valentine is especially useful due to the fact that he can play three positions, which can be essential for a team that has a multiple max contracts and limited cap space as a consequence.
Another bonus of adding Dunn and Valentine is that both are on expiring deals, leaving the Clippers more space to sign guys such as Montrez Harrell. Blakeney would more than likely be waived by Los Angeles due to the overabundance of shooting guards under contract for LA.
As for Chicago, the team would essentially flip three expiring deals into a twenty two-year-old lottery selection from just one year ago, a first round pick, and a bad contract that will expire after this season. For John Paxson, this move would have to be seen as a major victory. Jerome Robinson only played in 33 games in 2018-2019, playing only 9.3 minutes per contest.
He had no significant opportunity to show what he had as a Clipper, and he is a hot pick to be moved, as Landry Shamet and Louis Williams stand in front of him at the shooting guard spot. Robinson would assume the backup shooting guard position for the foreseeable future, which would be phenomenal for the Bulls considering his college resume and high expectations at the NBA level.
The first round pick acquired in the trade would more than likely be in the high twenties, however, any opportunity to acquire a first rounder has to be jumped on for a team that is still in a way rebuilding. The Moe Harkless contract also expires in the summer of 2020, so the Bulls would feel no lasting effect from the deal. In fact, Harkless may even be decent depth at power forward behind Lauri Markkanen and Thaddeus Young.
