The performance that the individual players on this list had under the direction of Boylen obviously plays a role on where they rank here. But a former Chicago Bulls standout like an MVP point guard Derrick Rose didn’t stick around for long while Boylen was on the coaching staff. Rose was dealt to the New York Knicks soon after Boylen was hired as an assistant.
Ending the D-Rose era with the Bulls was a sad but necessary move. Rose was most of the reason why the Bulls found any degree of high-level success in the Eastern Conference in the early and mid 2010’s. But Boylen didn’t do much it seemed to get Rose to the next level. It just so happened that he was present for one season while Rose was in the Windy City.
To be fair, Boylen wasn’t really given a fair shot at making an impact in the career of Rose by that point. If not for all the knee injuries, we could’ve seen that player-coach relationship potentially develop. At least Rose did play in 61 games that season, which is the most he did in a single season since the 2013-14 campaign.
In that one season between Rose and Boylen, he averaged 16.4 points per game, 4.7 assists, and 3.4 rebounds, while posting a player efficiency rating of 17.0. That was the last All-Star caliber season we saw out of Rose, even though he didn’t receive those honors in 2016.
