Progression with the New York Knicks

This linked highlight video of Kornet with the Knicks last season against the Chicago Bulls is a good example of how he could continue to develop his skill set. In that win over the Bulls, Kornet posted 24 points and three blocks. He shot 5-of-7 from three-point range and also brought down six boards.

Last season, the Knicks started to give Kornet a bigger and bigger role as the year moved along. His ability to stretch the floor and hit the glass on both ends of the floor earned him more playing time. Kornet is also a center that won’t get many looks from mid-range. His best looks came from within three-feet of the rim and beyond 16-feet from the rim.

Nearly every area of Kornet’s stat line among significant basic and advanced numbers improved from his rookie campaign to last season. He saw a 0.3 increase in his value over replacement player rating, 0.9 increase in total win shares, 1.2 point increase in player efficiency rating, and significant increases in both three-point and free-throw percentage.

The Knicks were so bad last season, but Kornet playing well generally translated to wins. In the nine games where Kornet was at least a plus-7 on the floor, the Knicks won six of them. Two of those losses were to a top team in the Eastern Conference with the Philadelphia 76ers and the other was by a narrow three-point margin to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
