Helping the Thunder stack future assets, even if it is with second round picks from the Chicago Bulls, is a good way to help them add versatility on the trade market. If the Thunder has more draft picks to work with while shopping Russell Westbrook, they would have more ability to get more teams involved on the receiving end.
However, the price for the Thunder to land two future second round picks from the Bulls also involves taking on the massive contract that is big man Cristiano Felicio. But the Thunder could work with defensively potent 6-foot-4 point guard Kris Dunn, and either keep him for the future or dish him elsewhere.
Ultimately, the Thunder get the versatility of Dunn and two future second round picks while getting rid of the money for small forward Jerami Grant. This trade is more than worth it for the Bulls if they can get their hands on Grant and promising shooting guard Terrance Ferguson.
There’s the possibility that Ferguson finds more traction with the Bulls than he did the Thunder. For his initial two seasons in the NBA, Ferguson couldn’t get his player efficiency rating even above 8.0. But there’s a lot to like about his game and physical tools that could make him a bounce back player with the Bulls this coming season. He also comes at a low cost, less than $3 million per year.
