This trade deal is a big risk for both sides. The Grizzlies would really have to like what they’re getting with the former Wizards small forward Otto Porter Jr. to fit alongside Jaren Jackson Jr. and Morant. Vice versa, the Chicago Bulls would have to bring a high-level of buy-in with Andre Iguodala, Josh Jackson, and Grayson Allen.
As extra motivation for the Bulls to be the ultimate landing spot for NBA journeymen in progress with Jackson and Allen, the Grizzlies will throw in an additional second round pick. The Bulls did well in the second round of this year’s draft, and could really use additional future picks.
The light at the end of the tunnel for the Bulls is the fact that they could come off the money owed to Iguodala quickly and Jackson and Allen don’t cost all that much to begin with. For the Grizzlies, Porter Jr. comes off this contract in two years and Dunn and shooting guard Antonio Blakeney could become key contributors (the former much more so than the latter) but are only on the books for one more year.
What could a rotation for the Bulls with Jackson and Iguodala on the wing look like for two or three years? Chicago Bulls head coach Jim Boylen would have to have enough buy-in for Jackson to think that he could become the starting small forward of the future here. He does have the potential, but the production has not shown up yet in the NBA.
