The first name that will inevitably scroll across the big screen on draft night will come as no surprise to anyone. Zion Williamson has been the consensus favorite to go number one overall since February. Williamson commanded attention every time he stepped foot on the court, dominating opposing teams to the tune of 22.6 points and 8.9 rebounds a night.
However, no one could have suspected which team would be the proud owners of the coveted top pick. New Orleans entered the draft lottery with a minuscule six percent chance at jumping to the top of the pack.
After a long season polluted by front office dysfunction and trade rumors, Pelicans’ vice president of basketball operations David Griffin manages to make out like a bandit when it’s all said and done.
Armed with two incredibly valuable trade chips in Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday, New Orleans has the rare opportunity to complete a rebuild just one year after a trip to the Western Conference semifinals. Swapping the two veterans for younger pieces would leave the Pelicans with a dangerous young squad and an open checkbook to attract a max level free agent or two in years to come.
