3. San Antonio Spurs
It’s pretty interesting that the San Antonio Spurs and head coach Gregg Poppovich were once reportedly thinking of the idea of trying to sign Derrick Rose. The fit between Rose and the Spurs seems like it would cause some type of friction in the locker room. Off-the-court issues aren’t run of the mill in San Antonio.
However, if the legendary head coach for the Spurs felt once as if this relationship could work out, then it could be worth pursuing. The Spurs are always in search of more rotational deep, especially at a premium like they could get Rose for. Move past the initial fears for this relationship, and Rose and the Spurs actually workout quite nicely.
A team mostly led by the former Toronto Raptors star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan and former Portland Trail Blazers power forward LaMarcus Aldridge could look to continue its rise back up the Western Conference standings soon. The Spurs are surely giving the two-seed Denver Nuggets a difficult run in the first round of the playoffs at the moment.
The bargain bin price tag that Rose could come with this summer, at possibly well under $5 million per year for his base salary, would be an appealing factor for the Spurs. He would be a low-risk, high-reward target if he doesn’t cause any unfortunate distractions in the locker room. It mostly wouldn’t be him causing the distractions either, just the national media and fans.
