Both the most realistic point guard target for the Chicago Bulls this summer and the best fit for the price could be veteran Utah Jazz starter Ricky Rubio. Filling that need for the Bulls for a point guard that commands the floor and plays well in the system under head coach Jim Boylen is key without drowning out all the cap space.
While Rubio is and up and down shooter, especially from range, he’s steadied in terms of his production elsewhere on the floor. Rubio will never be an elite scorer, but he’s one of the more efficient ball-handlers and facilitators in the NBA. He’s a true floor general that can make waves for this Bulls offense given the right supporting cast.
Rubio is also a solid two-way talent that can help the Bulls get more out of the starting five, especially at the point. Dunn just isn’t getting it done consistently on both ends of the floor right now. The presence of a veteran floor general like Rubio could help Dunn make that leap for the long-term like the fan base expected him to originally.
So far this season with the Jazz, Rubio averaged 12.7 points per game, 6.2 assists, and 3.6 rebounds. His free-throw percentage, well above 80, is solid but his field goal and three-point shooting percentages leave a lot to be desired. His shooting from range is going to be the biggest flaw about bringing Rubio into the mix in the Windy City.
