It just seems like a poor idea by now for any former Creighton standout to have anything to do with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Draft. This now makes McDermott and second-year center Justin Patton as two former Creighton stars that had a less than stellar run since getting drafted by the Bulls within the past five years.
However, Patton’s issues weren’t really on the court since he was selected by the Bulls and then traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He’s had a very unlucky run of broken foot injuries that required two surgeries in the span of less than 10 months. Patton managed to need surgery to repair both broken feet early in his career.
Patton was only able to play in one game with the Timberwolves before he was dished out to the Philadelphia 76ers too. Yet, we should rewind the tape to where Patton was after getting drafted by the Bulls and then traded to Minnesota. He was part of that huge deal that sent Jimmy Butler to the Timberwolves in exchange for the likes of Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn, and Lauri Markkanen.
We can’t dish on the Markkanen deal since he looks to be a key part of the future here in the Windy City. But, there are some better options that fill current needs for the Bulls in the backcourt and are playing better than Markkanen so far. Assuming the Bulls were able to swap him for Markkanen in the trade in 2017, Utah Jazz rising star guard Donovan Mitchell is a good replacement here.
