A contact extension could be happening for Bobby Portis as the Chicago Bulls are currently talking to his camp about a new deal.
During the season it was reported by Vincent Goodwill from NBC Sports that the Chicago Bulls will talk to Bobby Portis in the summer about a contract extension. The season is over, and both sides have been talking for a while now.
Bulls forward Bobby Portis played college basketball at University of Arkansas. Recently Bobby visited Arkansas and talked to reporters at the Mike Anderson Foundation Golf Tournament. Mike Anderson was Bobby’s college coach.
Bobby Portis just completed his third season with the Bulls. His third season was his best year in the NBA. Portis finished the season averaging 13.2 points, and 6.8 rebounds per game. At the golf tournament, Bobby told reporters that his side and the Bulls have been talking about a possible contract extension.
"“We’ve been talking about it for about a month now,” Portis said. “Hopefully we can come to terms. I feel like I’ve put myself in a great position. They know what they’re going to get out of me each and every day. I come to the gym early and leave late.”"
Portis loves Chicago
When asked about playing in Chicago, Portis said that he loves playing in front of Bulls fans.
"“It’s a blue-collar city and I’m a blue-collar player,” Portis said. “The fans there really embrace those players that go out on a nightly basis and give it their all. Even when I wasn’t playing, the fans stuck behind me. They had a ‘Free Portis’ movement my first two years, and now every time I check into the game, the crowd just goes crazy for me.”"
This past season Bobby only started in four games, and was asked if he believes that he can be an everyday starter in this league.
"“I get that question every interview I do,” Portis said. “I’ve always been a team player, team-first guy. Right now, I’m cool in my role. Me being a sixth man, being a scorer off the bench, is a pretty good gig in the league. But everybody wants to be a starter, and I do, too.”"
Something interesting that Portis told reporters was about what Bulls Vice President John Paxson texted him after the team traded Nikola Mirotic.
"“John Paxson texted me after they made the trade and told me he wanted to keep me because he feels like I’m a guy they believe in the most, that they wanted around,” Portis said. “He told me to keep working as hard as I can and keep getting better. One thing about this league, the guys that work get rewarded.”"
Every season Bobby Portis gets more and more comfortable. He continues to get better at his game, and it’s just a matter of time before the Bulls reward him with a contract extension.
