The Chicago Bulls hosted their official 2017-18 Media Day on Monday and fans got to see and hear the new-look Bulls prior to training camp opening on Tuesday morning.
Before the Chicago Bulls officially open up training camp on Tuesday with their first two practices of the 2017-18 season, the new-look Bulls hosted Media Day at the Advocate Center in Chicago.
Two of the biggest headlines that were expected to be huge talking points on Monday — Nikola Mirotic‘s contract situation and Dwyane Wade‘s buyout situation — reached solutions on Sunday with a two-year contract for Mirotic and a buyout of Wade’s contract to make him a free agent.
So, the conscience of the Bulls was rather clear heading into Media Day on Tuesday and the focus could be on the group of young Bulls entering the first year of a rebuild.
Here’s some of the sights and sounds from Bulls Media Day on Monday.
The official training camp roster for the Bulls
After coming to terms with a deal for Mirotic, the Bulls added Jarell Eddie and Jaylen Johnson to their training camp roster, bringing the total player count to 19 guys.
Eddie spent some time with the Windy City Bulls and the Phoenix Suns last season, while Johnson went undrafted in this past June’s draft out of Louisville after forgoing his senior season.
Alert: Robin Lopez has a new number this season

Robin Lopez is an awesome teammate, but did Zach LaVine have to give anything to Lopez in order to wear the No. 8 for the Bulls after the trade? Doug McDermott apparently never got his payment from Dwyane Wade last season for the No. 3 or at least we never heard about it.
Cristiano Felicio: the $32 million man
From the looks of things on Monday, the Bulls were wearing their home uniforms from Nike for the season. The Bulls are now wearing red at home this season with the new Nike uniform deal for the NBA and the unis look clean. The Chicago flag stars on the waistband are a nice touch, too.

No harsh feelings between the Bulls front office and Dwyane Wade
So, no thoughts on the reports that the younger players “couldn’t stand” Wade last season?

Bulls GM Gar Forman: "What's exciting for us is to start the rebuild. We've positioned ourselves well to head down this road."
— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) September 25, 2017
You know Gar Forman loves to tout that “flexibility” the Bulls have with this new roster. Just ask him. He’ll mention it about 4-5 times in the same quote.
Gar: "I think we positioned ourselves well to head down this road." Talked about 3 young guys in trade, have draft picks & cap space. #Bulls

Apparently, the young Bulls have been working hard
Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg: "I want to give our players a lot of credit for the commitment they've shown being in the gym this summer."
— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) September 25, 2017
The Bulls know what’s going on around them
Paxson: "We addressed (the political climate) briefly today. We understand the magnitude of what's going on, how divisive things are."
— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) September 25, 2017
John Paxson didn’t really give an answer about the current issues in America other than the Bulls will get together as a team and discuss matters.
“We want to hear from our players first before we address it publicly,” Paxson said.

Gar on 2018 draft: "As we go into this new direction, the draft is going to be very, very important."
— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) September 25, 2017
Oh, yes it is.
Taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank!
Pax: "We're not focused on (wins and losses). The most important thing for us is the culture we have in this building."
— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) September 25, 2017
Participation trophies for the lot of ya!
Zach LaVine was basically ruled out for Opening Night on Oct. 19
Paxson said it's "a safe bet" LaVine won't play in season opener. LaVine made news at summer league saying he'd be ready.
— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) September 25, 2017
(Also, GarPax was asked about a potential LaVine rookie extension in October.)
Gar Forman on Zach LaVine extension possibility: "Zach and his agents know what he means to us."
— Cody Westerlund (@CodyWesterlund) September 25, 2017
So, nobody’s getting fired? Well, that’s anti-climatic.
Paxson: "We have supportive ownership and we've defined our direction and are moving forward. Fred has our support."
— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) September 25, 2017
#MuscleWatch?
Niko Mirotic "has put on a lot of weight" -- in a good way -- Gar Forman says. #Bulls happy he was in Chicago this summer.

?, ?, ?, ? and Robin Lopez to start on Opening Night vs. Toronto
Hoiberg said other than Lopez at center, Bulls starters will feature "open competition."

Quincy Pondexter is actually going to play and that’s good for him

Zach LaVine is close, but he’s not quite there just yet…
Zach LaVine says doctors told him 9 months from his early February ACL tear as general timeline -- which would be early November.

… but…
Zach LaVine claimed he's running faster and jumping higher than pre-ACL tear.

The cut looks sharp, but Markkanen had the Jackie Moon from Semi-Pro look down during EuroBasket 2017.
He was all business for his first Media Day in Chicago, too.
Lauri Markkanen: "Of course I want to start, but it's not a deal-breaker for me."
— Cody Westerlund (@CodyWesterlund) September 25, 2017
Lauri Markkanen on his Eurobasket experience and his quality play in it: "It gave me confidence that I can do that against men."
— Cody Westerlund (@CodyWesterlund) September 25, 2017
Lauri Markkanen went to The Bean in Chicago, but that's about it: "I'm not here for sight-seeing. I'm ready to get to work."
