The 5 best Chicago Bulls players since Michael Jordan
By Wes Goldberg
5. Kirk Hinrich
“Captain” Kirk Hinrich was drafted seventh overall by the Bulls in the 2003 NBA Draft–the same draft that featured LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony. Hinrich, though certainly not on those players’ level historically, never seems to get the shout outs he deserves when the ’03 class is talked about.
Hinrich played 11 of his 13 NBA seasons in Chicago on two different stints. Though he never made an All-Star team, his competitiveness was a standout trait. From 2003 to 2010, Hinrich averaged 13.2 points, 5.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. He was also a 38 percent 3-point shooter during that time, averaging 4.1 3-point attempts per game.
Defensively, Hinrich bothered opponents with his length (6-foot-4, 190 pounds). He wasn’t elite on that end, but he was a pest. Sort of like Ricky Rubio, an elite perimeter defender with the same measurables as Hinrich.
For his career, Hinrich has scored the second-most points among Bulls players since Jordan, and has totaled the most assists by a mile (3,811. The next closest is Derrick Rose, with 2,516). He’s also played more games and more minutes, and his 11-year tenure in Chicago is unmatched by any Bulls player since 1998.
Hinrich’s teams went to the playoffs in five of his first seven seasons in Chicago. After stints with the Washington Wizards and Atlanta Hawks, he returned to the Bulls to team up with Rose in 2012. He played another three seasons in Chicago before a final season in Atlanta.
