Reviewing the Jimmy Butler trade from all sides
“Why not just keep Butler and build around him?”
See, this one I personally like.

The primary example with this one is the Houston Rockets. James Harden was their guy all those years ago when the Thunder couldn’t pay their entire young core and someone had to be the odd man out. It took Daryl Morey some time, but he’s spent the last couple seasons not only building a team that dominates the paint and shoots plenty of 3-pointers and finding players that can fit with Harden’s style of play.
Fred Hoiberg‘s offense is predicated around multiple ball-handlers and good perimeter shooting. The Bulls had basically neither of those last season. Only six teams shot worse from 3 last season than the Bulls did.
Why not put your best player at the head of the attack and put good shooting around him like the Rockets did with Harden? Butler could create when the opportunities were there.
The Bulls weren’t beating the likes of the Cleveland Cavaliers or Golden State Warriors anytime soon, but they could at least put themselves in position to attract someone(s) to play with Butler before his player option comes in after the 2018-19 season.
Of course, that would mean trusting Gar Forman and John Paxson to build a roster around their franchise centerpiece that could get over the LeBron hump in the postseason, which … I don’t think anyone would have confidence in them doing.
