The Point Guard Fiasco

Hey look, Payne gets brought up on a second point in a row.

What an utter catastrophe this season has been at the point guard spot. Just too many cooks. There was the trade that brought in Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon. The Rajon Rondo signing. The Spencer Dinwiddie kerfuffle. The Michael Carter-Williams trade. The stork who dropped off Isaiah Canaan. Payne at the deadline.

Heading into the playoffs, Chicago still has Rondo, Carter-Williams, Grant, Payne and Canaan on the roster. They played against Dinwiddie twice this week, he’s with the Nets now.

All year, no one could grab the starting position and keep it. The point guard spot was wide open. Rondo played awful basketball, when he wasn’t suspended or receiving a DNP, until the month of March. MCW has been an ultimately a gamble lost, fans incorrectly howling about how much better life would be with Tony Snell.

Payne has played 11 games with Chicago, has 15 total assists, and 33 percent shooting. Not great.

Sip Canaan has been stapled to the bench. And that just leaves Grant. It’s been alright for Jerian over the past couple of weeks and he’s developed a strong follow among Bulls supporters, but I am not on board. He has shown enough over the past couple of weeks that he couple be a backup long term on the offensive end of the floor. His defense is terrible and he went about four months between “statement” games.

Of the crew assembled this season only Grant should be around next year, and in a backup role. Of course, Payne will likely be back and I won’t bet against GarPax reupping on Rajon.
