Paul Zipser

The 22-year-old Zipser has arrived.

With Denzel Valentine out due to an ankle injury, there’s another rookie the Bulls picked up in the 2016 NBA Draft to get excited about.

Zipser, a product of Bayern Munich’s basketball division in Germany, didn’t get any run in the first preseason game. That changed in Game 2. He got into the game in the second half and basically stayed in the game the rest of the way. In all, he got 13:59 of game time, scoring seven points on 2-for-4 shooting.

He also flashed the defense, making a particularly nice chase down block:

Zipser also snagged two rebounds and committed just one turnover. His solid game went much deeper than the stat line. He played very solid basketball with good passing and vision, setting good off-ball screens and generally avoiding to get run when he was on defense.

Valentine was the big name grab in the draft and Mirotic was the prized acquisition from overseas, but Zipser quietly made his debut and was nothing short of impressive in his NBA preseason debut. It isn’t likely that he will be starting games any time soon, but with the Valentine situation, Zipser stands to be a beneficiary of available minutes.

Chicago will be back in action, again playing the Pacers, on Saturday night. Hopefully, they can get a better result than their trip to Indianapolis produced.
