Killer Croc: Robin Lopez

This is it.

Robin Lopez, the large, comic-book loving, above replacement level defender is Killer Croc.

Croc is part of the extended DC Universe and has spent most of his time fighting some combination of Bane and Batman, just ready to tangle with anyone that suits him. He’s relatively new to the whole Suicide Squad thing, having not been part of the universe for essentially his entire existence leading into this movie. If you’re a comic book nerd that is reading this and on the verge of freaking out because I got his story wrong, just remember this is a basketball blog.

Lopez is also new to his Squad. Having just arrived via trade last month, there is still a long way to go before fans will be fully familiar and comfortable with Lopez, who has the unenviable task of replacing the eternally popular Joakim Noah.

It should be noted that there is one major miss in the analogy of the two characters – intelligence. Croc is portrayed as being of low intellect, while Lopez went to Stanford and did, you know, college stuff.

Perhaps, the only real link between these two is their varying degrees of atavism. While Croc is clearly humanoid-crocodile, Lopez, with his furrowed brown, Sideshow Bob-esque hair, and generally larger than life features might more resemble the ancient ancestors of humans in a more Cro-Magnon existence with his stout defense and strong post game, but with slightly more lumbering athleticism and limited shooting range. Lopez might feel right at home in the pre-modern era, say, the 1994-95 NBA season.

Lopez rounds out the Chicago Bulls version of the Suicide Squad. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading. I’m fairly confident we did better with this slideshow than Warner Brothers did with the movie.
