Remaining FA targets that fit with Lonzo Ball: Justise Winslow
The odds that the Bulls go after a wing like the former Duke Blue Devils small forward Justise Winslow in free agency this summer dove a good bit after the sign-and-trade deal with the Spurs went down to land DeRozan. That now gives the Bulls a wing rotation that could include the likes of DeRozan, shooting guard/small forward Troy Brown Jr., and maybe even shooting guard Javonte Green, if he’s re-signed this summer.
Given that Green and Brown Jr. both already play good on-ball defense at the two-guard and on the wing, that could be tough for Winslow to find a niche here. But if Karnisovas and the Bulls are planning to let Green walk this offseason, then a spot could open up for Winslow to shore up the wing.
Winslow is not a good shooter, but his off-ball play and defensive ability will usually hold a role open for him in nearly every NBA rotation.
If the Bulls ever move to a more switchable small ball lineup, which could really play to the benefit of DeRozan’s skill set, then adding someone like Winslow could be huge. The Bulls could even run something like Winslow and DeRozan at the four and the five. More likely, though, would be the Bulls playing Winslow at the four and DeRozan at the three in that scenario.
The Memphis Grizzlies declined Winslow’s team option this offseason, making him an unrestricted free agent. His next contract is likely to pay him an average annual value in the eight figures. A short-term deal could be something that is low-risk for the Bulls, and would be likely to pay off if Winslow is at least able to stay healthy most of the way.
