Former Tar Heels the Chicago Bulls could pair with Coby White: Ed Davis
Although there was once a bigger need for the Bulls to sign a potential backup center like the veteran former Tar Heel Ed Davis, there could still be a fit for him on this bench for head coach Billy Donovan. Depending on what the Bulls’ front office decides to do with the likes of fourth-year power forward Lauri Markkanen and center Daniel Theis, the space could be open for a backup center like Davis on the bench.
In all likelihood, the Bulls would look to someone like Davis if they are very strapped for cap room and are running out of options for who to add to the frontcourt unit on the bench. The role for Davis with his last few teams dwindled since about the start of the 2018-19 season. Last season with the Timberwolves, he only played in 23 games, with an average of around 13 minutes per game.
The last time that Davis averaged more than 20 minutes of playing time per game was way back during the 2015-16 season, with the Portland Trail Blazers.
But the Bulls are going to have one spot that could open up for a target among free agent big men like Davis this summer. The Bulls are about to see overpaid big man Cristiano Felicio finally get off the books this summer. So a big man that can fill a role deeper down the bench could be needed.
Davis is a good rebounder and a decent rim protector that wouldn’t cost the Bulls much at all. They have a few spots on the books that he could occupy this summer. But if the Bulls do manage to sign Davis this summer, it would probably be for a one-year minimum deal.
