Point guards for the Chicago Bulls to sign before Derrick Rose: Kyle Lowry

As a costlier option that wouldn’t be a long-term solution as a starting point guard for the Bulls, the potential to-be former Toronto Raptor Kyle Lowry would still be a tremendous short-term addition to the starting unit. Lowry would definitely be a more effective starting point guard in the near term for the Bulls than D-Rose.

He would also be a less injury-prone and more expensive option for the Bulls to fill their point guard need than D-Rose. The six-time All-Star selection Lowry is past the prime years of his career as it seems, but he’s still one of the better point guards in the NBA.

The matter of the Bulls signing Lowry would just be the type of price tag he commands on his next contract. What could work in the Bulls’ favor in terms of pursuing the impending unrestricted free agent Lowry is how many options there are at this position this summer.

But there are going to be other suitors for Lowry that could have more cap space to work with this summer, and a better path to contend for a title immediately. The Bulls could definitely offer Lowry a spot to make an immediate impact and get into the postseason again.

The overall potential that the Bulls would have with Lowry in the mix would be a question mark. It’s hard to tell what the ceiling could be for the Bulls with a starting unit that features the likes of Lowry, LaVine, star center Nikola Vucevic, and rookie forward Patrick Williams.

Last season, Lowry still produced at a high level for the Raptors. He wasn’t the same point guard he was during the years playing alongside superstar forward Kawhi Leonard and shooting guard/small forward DeMar DeRozan, but Lowry was still likely the most consistent presence for the Raptors during their disappointing 2020-21 campaign.
