Unlikely veteran PG targets for the Chicago Bulls this summer: Kyle Lowry

I’ve discussed before the idea of the Bulls pursuing an unlikely option through the free agent market this summer to get help at the point guard position in the form of the Toronto Raptors star and one-time NBA Champion Kyle Lowry. The 35-year-old longtime Raptors floor general is a six-time All-Star selection, but his prime years are likely behind him now.

The Bulls would have to be willing to throw a bag at Lowry, granted his next price tag would likely be lower than his most recent contract with the Raptors. This season, Lowry’s contract with the Raptors paid him a salary of $30 million. He’s not very likely to command max contract level money in free agency this offseason.

Lowry is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He doesn’t have a team or player option that is waiting to be exercise. And it’s unlikely that he returns to the Raptors. That looks like a team that is about to go through a rebuild, granted potentially a short one.

Since the Bulls do really need a point guard with the experience and playmaking ability of Lowry, this could be a solid fit. As long as the Bulls could make room for Lowry on their cap sheet this summer, this could be a viable landing spot for him.

Lowry wouldn’t be a long-term solution for the Bulls at the one, but he could certainly maximize the trio of Williams, LaVine, and Vooch in the near-term.
