Chicago Bulls options to get Marcus Smart from the Celtics: A straight up trade

Bulls Recieve: Marcus Smart, Grant Williams

Celtics Recieve: Tomas Satoransky, Thaddeus Young

A trade like this would see the Bulls get Smart plus-one while giving up more of the rotation. Despite having an amazing season, Thaddeus Young is 32 and an upcoming free agent in 2022. Because of this, it would be smart for the team to potentially look to cash in on his value now, in order to prevent a situation where they either overpay or let him walk for nothing later.

As for Satoransky, if the Bulls were able to acquire Smart, it would mean another guard to enter the rotation. And with Coby White and LaVine in there, it would just be too few minutes for too many guys, sadly making Sato a surplus to requirements.

Finally, by taking in someone like Grant Williams, it gives the Bulls an amazing versatile defender to pair with Vucevic, allowing some of the defensive burden to be alleviated at times.

On top of this, Williams is an improving three-point shooter (37 percent on two attempts this season), providing a potentially better fit in the frontcourt. Finally, with him only being 22, it means he has the potential to grow into an even better player, something Young and Tomas Satoransky, unfortunately, don’t have at the ages of 32 and 29 respectively.

All in all, any trade for Smart that does not involve a sign and trade would mean the Bulls giving up a chunk of their rotation. However, it is a move worth considering, as the fit seems too good to pass up. It’s moves like these that could really make or break the Bulls’ chances at the playoffs next seasons, but the types of risks that need to be made in order to win in today’s NBA.
