Chicago Bulls players who exceeded expectations in 20-21: Daniel Theis
One key piece that the Bulls landed at the trade deadline that was solid down the stretch was the former Boston Celtics big man Daniel Theis. The 6-foot-8 and 245-pound 29-year-old center became an integral part of the Bulls’ frontcourt rotation down the stretch, and could once again be an important part of this team next season.
With Theis set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, the Bulls front office should prioritize re-signing him. The last contract Theis was on had him signed down for just $5 million annually about. That’s not a whole lot for a big man that contributed as much two-way value for the Bulls as he did.
Theis’ production rose in almost every stat category in terms of counting stats and advanced metrics after coming over from Boston to Chicago. He averaged 10.0 points per game, 5.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.6 blocks, in 23 games with the Bulls this season. And Theis shot 55.2 percent from the field, 34.7 percent from beyond the arc, and 68.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Landing Theis at the trade deadline figured to be a big move for this Bulls’ frontcourt rotation. But he wound up becoming a starting-caliber big man that paired nicely alongside the likes of Vooch and rookie forward Patrick Williams. Boasting soft hands and good coordination for a big man, Theis brings a new dynamic to this unit for the Bulls.
