Bulls deadline misses No. 3: Spencer Dinwiddie

It was clear at the deadline that Karnisovas and the Bulls were going to prioritize getting an upgrade at the point guard position. And while they didn’t accomplish that in the end on deadline day, it feels like the Bulls’ new front office regime is still very much going to try and get an upgrade at the one come next offseason.

One of the more creative ideas that the Bulls could’ve taken to at the deadline was trading with the Brooklyn Nets for standout point guard Spencer Dinwiddie. Although Dinwiddie is recovering from surgery and will miss the rest of the season in all likelihood, teams like the Bulls had the chance to get control of his bird rights ahead of his player option in the next cycle of free agency.

Dinwiddie can pick up his player option next offseason, which would then pay him just north of $12 million in the final year of his current contract. And that is a very affordable price for a Bulls team that could be pretty cap-strapped next offseason given the moves they made at the deadline. Finding value in creative ways might be a route that the Bulls have to take from here on out.

There’s little chance that the Nets want to keep Dinwiddie around in a bench role for too long if they can get value for him elsewhere. A trade could still be looming for the Bulls next offseason if the Nets are willing to part ways with Dinwiddie for a reasonable price. He would go a long way to helping solve the team’s point guard woes.
