Trade targets to avoid that could derail progress No. 1: Kristaps Porzingis
For reasons other than just a sizable contract that the front office shouldn’t bring onto their cap sheet, Karnisovas and the Bulls should very much do their best to avoid a trade with the Dallas Mavericks that involves the seven-footer and standout power forward Kristaps Porzingis. The former New York Knicks big man Kristaps could hit the trade market this year but is too expensive for the Bulls to realistically consider.
Even outside of the cost that could come along with getting involved in discussions to land Porzingis, the Bulls shouldn’t bring on another injury-prone big man at this point. The Bulls are already housing a frontcourt rotation full of injury-prone big men including the likes of fourth-year power forward Lauri Markkanen, third-year center Wendell Carter Jr., and fellow former Knicks big man Luke Kornet.
While it would be fun to watch a frontcourt that involves two pure shooters and skilled seven-footers such as Lauri and Kristaps, it’s hard to imagine them being healthy on a consistent basis at the same time. Lauri also currently sits in the final year of his rookie deal, so he could be hitting the free agent and/or trade market himself this year.
Although Mavs owner Mark Cuban recently tried to ensure his fans that the team was not looking into a Kristaps trade, it would make sense if they part ways with him, and soon.
Superstar Mavs point guard Luka Doncic isn’t getting to the heights with this team that many thought he would this season. And many hoops fans point to the lack of ability of Kristaps to stay consistently healthy as the reason for the Mavs struggles in the win column.
