3) Why Chicago Bulls should hire Billy Donovan: Benefit to the young guards

What Donovan has proved over and over again, whether it be at the college or NBA level, that he can develop and best utilize talent in almost any rotation. The Bulls haven’t really had a head coach, maybe even with former head coach Tom Thibodeau (recently signed with the New York Knicks), recently that can do something like that.

The Thunder at least ranked in the top half of the NBA in both offensive and defensive rating in every single season he was their head coach. Their defense continued to improve in terms of defensive rating year-over-year (peaking at No. 2 in the NBA), until everything was shaken up last offseason with the Russell Westbrook-CP3 trade with the Rockets.

What would the presence of Donovan mean to this young core, and more specifically the backcourt rotation, of the Bulls?

The standout 25-year-old 6-foot-6 shooting guard Zach LaVine would surely benefit from having a head coach that is more proficient for player efficiency like Donovan in the mix starting next season. LaVine clashed with Boylen often during his two seasons with the Bulls, and could continue to take his game to new heights under a coach like Donovan.

The Bulls could also continue the positive development path of key pieces of the young core like power forward Lauri Markkanen, point guard Coby White, center Wendell Carter Jr., and small forward Otto Porter Jr. with Donovan in Chicago. In the season that was, the Bulls ranked among the four teams in the NBA in offensive rating under Boylen (106.7).
