After word broke yesterday, before the Chicago Bulls shocked the Miami Heat in game one, that Derrick Rose was still mulling the possibility of a return during the series, now “word out of Chicago” is that Rose will be in uniform for game three on Friday, per Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD.

This really feels like a non-story, since even Kennedy is skeptical that Rose would actually play, even if he suited up, but it is encouraging, I guess. But for now, the story should be on the court, where the Bulls continue to overcome all manner of injuries and lead the Heat 1-0. Game two is tomorrow night in Miami.

Derrick Rose spoke to the media today and indicated he “might have a chance” to return at some point in the Chicago Bulls’ series against the Miami Heat. Rose has obviously missed the last year or so since tearing his ACL on April 28, 2012.

There are still obviously no guarantees and this objectively seems like a terrible idea, given that Rose would have to get back up to game speed against the defending champs and the best team in the NBA, but apparently it could happen. The Bulls and Rose have said all along that there’s no “drop-dead” date for Rose’s return, even if that return would come in the playoffs.

Rose has begun sitting on the bench with the rest of the team during games as of the start of the playoffs, which he’d only done once during the regular season, leading some to speculate he might return during the Bulls’ first-round series against the Brooklyn Nets. Reggie Rose, Derrick’s brother, had previously indicated a return might be in the cards if the Bulls made it to the second round and faced the Heat.

The main takeaway is that we shouldn’t get our hopes up. The odds are still very much in favor of Rose not returning at all this year, and I do wonder if a return would be smart at all, but Rose will do what he thinks is best for him. Now all we can do is wait.
