You know Pippen Peoples it is time to stop and reflect on the most beautiful women in the world. Our mothers. They have single most thankless job on Earth. I think the reason the Kevin Durant MVP speech touched so many people (I’m not going to lie, I was tearing up too) was because we all can relate to how our mothers sacrificed to make our lives easier even when we didn’t deserve it sometimes. This article is dedicated to my Mom, Delois Agers.
About a year ago, I was writing for a small newspaper called MetroProponent News. I wrote a small column that came out one a month. My moniker was Anquan Grey Blackman aka “The Angry Blackman”. I would write about things in sports that was just plain ridiculous (Think Donald Sterling for an example) and write about it. She loved the articles but hated the name. I promised I would change the name for months. Until one day she sat me down at the kitchen table while I was visiting. She told me something that would change my life.
She told me that she wanted me to stop directing TV newscasts and concentrate on my writing. At the time I was a finalist to direct at ESPN. When I didn’t get it she said that she was glad because if I got the job, I would not grow as a person. She went on to tell me that I had a gift and I needed to work on writing and getting better. Now understand I have been doing television for 20 years. She didn’t care, she knew I was a great director but I needed a challenge. There are not a lot of people on this planet that can tell me this and get away without me getting upset. She didn’t care. For that alone I changed my writing style and overhauled my entire concept. Months later, I got this gig.
Pippen Peoples, I would like to thank my mom for challenging me for the better. I think all the good moms out there do the same thing that my mom did. A lot of times we blow it off and keep it moving. As of now almost 200 articles and counting over five months with the collaboration of people at FanSided and interviews, I’m having a lot of fun with a positive direction for my career.
It’s not easy trying to bring you the best Bulls news, previews and reviews. I lose sleep sometimes working to get the best information for you. (Check the time stamp sometimes Pippen Peoples!) But what keeps me going is the inspiration that my mom has given me. 25 years ago this week I remember my mom driving through tornados one night that ripped through North Carolina in 1989 trying to get her Master’s Degree. All of this while she was an award winning teacher. She wasn’t satisfied. She challenged herself. Now I get it.
Mom, I want to say in front of everyone. I love you. Happy Mother’s Day! If it wasn’t for you, I would not be doing this now. I felt this would be a proper venue to tell you how I feel. I’m your biggest fan!
For the rest of the Pippen Peoples, tell your Mom you love her and show your appreciation. If she is no longer with us, just look to the sky and have a quiet moment.
