Multiple outlets have now reported the Chicago Bulls will sign free agent big man Lou Amundson to a 10-day contract this weekend. The move comes in the wake of Taj Gibson’s knee injury because Luol Deng already plays too many minutes and neither Nazr Mohammed nor Vladimir Radmanovic have shown themselves capable of helping out while Gibson is sidelined.
The former Timberwolf, Pacer, Warrior and Sun has never been much of an offensive player, but he’s OK defensively and a half-decent rebounder. The Bulls basically just need someone who isn’t completely terrible to help out while Gibson’s out, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Amundson get some of the minutes currently allocated to Joakim Noah once Taj comes back. Noah plays a lot more minutes than is really good for him, especially in light of his recent injury problems, which is mostly a function of the Bulls lacking an actual backup for him.
Basically anything Amundson can give the Bulls would make him worth the money they’ll be giving him. The Bulls have gotten less than nothing from their non-Taj bench big men, so even getting nothing from Amundson would be an improvement.
