The last biggest question surrounding the Bulls tumultuous offseason has been answered. Today at Bulls Media Day to kick off training camp, Gar Forman has announced Chicago and head coach Tom Thibodeau have agreed on a 4-year contract extension.
“I’m thankful to Jerry and Gar and John.” Thibodeau said, sounding just as excited as he usually sounds about everything. “I never doubted it would work out. I love being here, I want to be here.”
A lot of doubt surrounded Thibodeau and his contract and there had really been no major progress made all offseason long. Bulls fans weren’t keen on the situation thanks the the Bulls front office smoke screening them with the gutting of the bench mob and other “basketball decisions” that stunk an awful lot like penny pinching.
But the Bulls put up good money and finish the offseason with what may end up being their only basketball decision. Bringing back Thibdoeau through the 2016 season means Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and company will remain with their head coach and continuity will not be messed with.
Obviously the Bulls chances of winning a title revolves around Derrick Rose and his health, but the unsung hero in the Bulls success is Thibodeau as he’s the mastermind behind everything.
Need proof, see: Vinny Del Negro.
“I’m biased,” GM Gar Forman said at the announcement at Media Day. “I think [Thibs] is the best coach in the NBA.”
Thibodeau is really the only hope for this literal rag-tag bench to be successful. When Gar Forman assembled what eventually became known as The Bench Mob, they were viewed in a slightly brighter light than the current bench. But Thibodeau extracted the best qualities out of each and molded the bench into the best in the NBA.
So having Thibodeau back is obviously a brilliant move and a saving grace for Gar Forman and a Bulls front office that shelled itself with horrible decisions coated in lies.
This is finally a truth: Tom Thibodeau will be the long term head coach of the Chicago Bulls.
