The fourth and final game in today’s Olympic basketball bonanza featured a heavily favored team nearly edge out the competition (stop me when this starts to sound familiar). Team USA was heavily favored to take care of Australia in their quarterfinals meeting today but those watching were getting flashbacks to the Lithuania game which the American’s almost lost.

Despite a jittery start to things, Team USA advanced to a semifinals showdown with Argentina behind LeBron James’ triple-double.

James was one of the only consistent players throughout the game, posting a triple-double to prop up the American effort. Kevin Love also turned in another amazing performance off the bench

It’s a win or go home round and with everything on the line and no safety net, Team USA looked sluggish all throughout the game and never really ever took the kind of gigantic lead it usually took in pool play.

Kobe Bryant was virtually non-existent for the entire first three quarters of the game and didn’t score a single bucket until the third.

The question entering the game was how would the American’s cover Patrick Mills. The answer was not well — at least not at first. Mills helped lead the Aussies and kept them close to Team USA for the first three quarters, finishing with 26 points.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the American’s finally began to pull away with things. But where the American’s hold things down is beyond the arc. Team USA shot just over 41 percent from three point range and held things down in the paint. Kevin Love and LeBron James combined for 35 rebounds while the bench production from Williams and others remains consistent.

With the win, Team USA has sort of exorcised some demons that still remain from the close call with Lithuania. Now that the Lithuanian’s have been eliminated by Russia, Team USA only has to worry about teams looking at the blueprint and trying to figure out a way to beat them. Australia tried and failed to do so but the upcoming semifinals showdown with Argentina may be a bit of a challenge.
