They got off to a painfully slow start but Team USA was able to dispense Tunisia 110-63 to improve to 2-0 in group play. Kevin Love scored 16 points and grabbed 6 boards as the American’s got their footing after a rocky first quarter and outscored the Tunisian’s 97-76 in the final three quarters. Carmelo Anthony, who started the game, also scored 16 points and Kevin Durant posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
But it’s the slow start that had many watching sweating profusely. The starters for Team USA looked sluggish to begin things and it took Coach Mike Krzyzewski benching most of them to get the message across that any kind of “taking it easy” is not acceptable in Olympic play.
Of course after the benching the American’s were unstoppable but straight out of the gate it looked like we could have been in for a bit of a tight one.
Anthony Davis made a bit of a mark, turning in a 12 point performance. He was joined by Thunder teammates James Harden and Russell Westrbook in the double digit point group as well as Melo, Love and Durant.
Unlike the terrible day the French had against Team USA from beyond the arc in the opening game, Tunisia was able to get their shooting percentage north of 30 percent both from the field and beyond the arc. But the fire power from the American’s top guns was too much to handle.
One thing to take away from the game is that Kevin Love was a major factor in the win — marking the second straight game he’s been noteworthy. Many predicted that Love need to be big down low for the American’s if they wanted to win Gold and so far he’s been a giant in the paint. He now has 30 points and 9 rebounds in Team USA’s two games thus far.
Up next for Team USA is Nigeria, whom they get on Thursday at 10:15 local time here in London (5:15 ET back in the States). The Nigerians are 1-1 in group play, beating the Tunisian’s in their opening game but losing to Lithuania earlier today.
