2012 Olympics: Durant Drops 22 as Team USA Cruises Past France 98-71

Leaders: USA- K.Durant: 22pts, 8reb France- T. Parker: 10pts

Team USA kicked off what it hopes is a gold medal journey this afternoon against France, a game that got really out of hand in the second quarter.  France gave the American’s all they cold in the first quarter and only trailed by one point. But it was Kevin Durant and his 22 points that put Team USA over the top and sets them at 1-0 in group play.

The French actually almost outscored the American’s in the final quarter of play but it was a fruitless effort as Team USA was already on a roll and had already taken a more than commanding lead.

France didn’t actually shoot that bad from the field. They shot over 30 percent from two point range but it was their work beyond arc that really killed them. France shot just 2 for 23 from three point land, while the Americans shot well over 40 percent.

The bench for Team USA was also alive in their opening match. Levin Love had 14 points and 3 rebounds while Carmelo Anthony had 9 points and 9 rebounds off the bench. Love and starter Kobe Bryant were the only other American to join Kevin Durant in scoring double digit points.

As for the look ahead, Team USA gets Tunisia on Tuesday at 10pm local time here in London which means those watching back in the States should pencil in a 4pm start time.

Tunisia isn’t going to pose much of a threat the United States, but it’s trap games like that which prove to always be problems. Tunisia however, has already lost in group play to Nigeria 60-58. The Nigerians aren’t a good example of competition since they don’t stack up against Team USA well either.

Tunisia and Team USA tip off Tuesday at 10:15pm local time, 4:15pm Chicago time.
