The newest member of the Brooklyn Nets isn’t wasting anytime getting cozy with his new teammates. Former Bulls backup guard C.J. Watson has come out and said the Nets point guard Deron Williams is “the best point guard in the NBA”
“I always thought Deron was the best point guard in the league, always playing against him, watching him,” Watson said. “He’s always one of the toughest players … when everyone asks me who is the toughest point guard, I always say him.”
Now before you grab your knee-jerk pitchforks and torches, calm down a minute.
Watson isn’t pulling this stuff out of thin air. Williams is one of the elite guards in the NBA and Watson is in the perfect position to make a claim like the one he did.
He spent two years behind the eventual MVP of the league in Derrick Rose so don’t forget that Watson’s pretty familiar with Rose’s body of work. But even though Williams hasn’t won any accolades, that doesn’t change the fact he’s one of the league’s best.
Watson followed up the comment by saying Rose wouldn’t mind him saying Williams was the best guard in the league. What general NBA fans should have gripe with is Watson throwing out Williams over guys like Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo.
But that’s only if you’re being nit-picky.
Don’t take Watson’s comments to heart. It’s a legitimate claim that Watson has every right in the world to make. Why do you think Rose doesn’t mind Watson saying it? Not only is Rose a low key guy when it comes to playing favorites, but he’s driven by a passion for proving people wrong.
The real question is, is Watson saying what he said because he knows what it’ll do to Rose’s game?
