Over the next week we will be taking a look at various and realistic draft possibilities for the Chicago Bulls.
NAME: Fab Melo
HIGHLIGHTS: 2012 Big East Best Defensive Player, 2012 Big East All-Defensive Team
PROS: Fab Melo is huge, there is no getting past that. He’s a monster shot blocker and very well could become one of the NBA’s best shot blockers if he really works at it. Which brings me to his work ethic; Melo has an amazing ethic and proof of that is how hard he worked to get into better shape this season which made him a more fluid and athletic player above the rim. He’s a rebounder too which is a massive plus and pretty much a requirement in the NBA for centers. He’s not the best center in the draft but he’s got undeniable size and athleticism that if toned and honed can pump out a serious top-5 center in the near future.
CONS: He’s offensively challenged the way that most Saturday Night Live hosts are comically challenged. Watching Fab Melo try to play offense is as painful as watching Cameron Diaz force funny on us all. That’s Melo’s biggest knock coming into the draft and it definitely has hurt his stock to an extent. He’s also extremely foul prone and as good a work ethic he can have at times, Melo needs to keep it up and not slack. If he begins to slack on his ethic then he could fall off the map and all that he could be won’t ever be.
IS HE A FIT IN CHICAGO: If the Bulls had their shooting guard situation all sewed up then Melo would no about be a major if not a top target for them in the draft. He’s got size and most importantly he’s already a defensive monster which has to have Thibodeau going crazy. Melo still could be a n option for the Bulls as he’s projected to be a late-first round pick and could fall to the Bulls. If he does Gar Forman and John Paxson will have a tough decision to make. He could easily be the starting center of the future with Joakim Noah sliding over to fill a potential hole at power forward if Carlos Boozer gets the axe after 2013. He’s not offensive but you don’t need to be an offensive center in Chicago and even then Melo has shown flashes of grooving from mid-range. This may be a bit of a stretch but the way the Bulls are strutted under Tom Thibodeau, Fab Melo very well could be their perfect prospect.
BOTTOM LINE: Melo isn’t going to wow you with his offense and he may very well frustrate the hell out of you most of the time on that end but he more than makes up for it with his defensive skills. He’s got great height and a sizable wingspan which very well could make him one of the league’s best shot blockers in the near future. But because he’s really a one sided prospect he’s going to fall. But don’t think that makes him a bad choice.
