Derrick Rose Tweets "Premature"; ACL Tear Rumors False

So in the last hour we’ve all seen something amazing happen: Twitter has warped our sense of ethics.

In the last hour two different ‘credible’ news outlets reported that Derrick Rose had torn his ACL and MCL and would be out for the remainder of the season.

Now here’s the thing about that, and please children, try to follow.

Derrick Rose left to have an MRI on his knee the second he grabbed it in the fourth quarter. No less then twenty minutes after the game had ended, while Rose was still in the building, NBC Miami reported that Rose was out.

Okay, K.C. Johnson, Sam Smith, Nick Friedell, and myself are all standing in the locker room, literally in the same building as Derrick Rose and an affiliate in Miami gets the jump on all of us, even the ESPN guys? NBC Miami retracted the tweet, and tweeted an apology that the initial tweet was ‘premature’. But that wasn’t before a  Breaking News outlet retweeted the report and spread the story like wildfire.

Remember when Joe Paterno died, but he really wasn’t dead yet? Yeah, we really need to start to rethink the ethics of Twitter and maybe put a filter on the unfiltered style we vomit reports like the ones out of Miami today.

Here’s my final word on this: not only are all of us reporters standing outside waiting for word, but the MRI hasn’t even taken place yet! Unless you can predict the future, or you’re guessing so it looks like you got the scoop first, there is no way to know the results of an MRI before the MRI has taken place.

That means that even if Rose (God forbid) has actually torn ligaments that will keep him out for the rest of the postseason, then NBA Miami didn’t turn out to be right all along, they guessed and raped the code of ethics that journalists are supposed to have.

So please, let’s all slow our roll on this Derrick Rose business. When the results are known, the people who are reliable will let you know what really going on.
