It was an eventful Tuesday for the league’s MVP. First Derrick Rose was given notice that he will have to pay a $25,000 fine for calling into question the referees ability to call a game. Then he missed practice due to soreness from a groin injury. On his way to the doctor to get the groin evaluated, Rose was involved in a fender bender on the Kennedy Expressway.
Illinois State police officials said, Rose’s 2011 beige Bentley was rear-ended at around 4:25 p.m. on the I-90 southbound lanes at Ogden. The other driver was given a ticket and Rose told police his own doctor would check him later for any injuries sustained.
“Derrick’s not a complainer,” Tom Thibodeau said. “Usually if he says something, he has a point he wants to make. He was driving the ball pretty hard and didn’t get calls. … He’s a hard guy to officiate. Because of his speed and power, you don’t recognize when he is being hit. He’ll play through things and he doesn’t say very much. But he was frustrated.”
Now after all that, the Bulls superstar is doubtful for the Bulls massive showdown with the Miami Heat in Chicago today. The game will give the Bulls an opportunity to get some real separation between themselves and the Heat in the race for the top seed in the East. Tom Thibodeau isn’t seeing it as the Bulls being on top at the moment, he’s still firmly planted in Game 5 of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals.
“We’re chasing them,” Thibodeau said of the Heat. “They’re the Eastern Conference champions. We know we have to defend, rebound and take care of the ball. That was one thing down there we felt we didn’t do (well). The way they convert turnovers into points, if they get in the open floor, they’re hard to stop.”
If Rose can’t go, Mike James has been re-signed for a third time to add depth to an injury riddled position. C.J. Watson is still hobbled by an injury and he may not be able to go Wednesday either.
Should Chicago be without Rose, the entire game shifts in momentum to the Heat. However, that doesn’t mean that the game should be automatically awarded to the South Beach Villains. The Bulls can still make it an interesting game sans Rose, but they will see what kind of team they really are without him.
The truth of that might be a little more then fans will want to bare.
