The Chicago Bulls will be thrice represented at this year’s All-Star Game. We already knew that Derrick Rose and Luol Deng will be dawning the blue jersey’s but with their win Tuesday night against the Kings, the Bulls clinched Tom Thibodeau’s chances of coaching the Eastern All-Stars.
“It’s more a testament and a byproduct of what our team has done,” Thibodeau said. “Anytime you can participate in anything like that, it’s always good. It’s an honor and I look forward to it.”
Thibodeau joins Rose and Deng in Orlando, making the coach joining the players feat a first for Chicago since Phil Jackson joined Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen back in the early 90’s.
It won’t be the first All-Star Game Thibodeau has been on the coaching staff for. Thibs coached as an Assistant in the vacation game for Jeff Van Gundy with the Knicks and Doc Rivers representing Boston.
Thibodeau will be coaching some of the very guys he works tirelessly to shut down — chief among them LeBron James and Dwayne Wade.
There has been jokes that Thibodeau should just play the two for the full 48 minutes. Thibodeau won’t play dirty like that but it really puts a spin on the chase all three are on. Plus it will make for some nice pregame fodder when it comes time for the Bulls to meet the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals.
