Playoffs Ain’t Easy: Bulls Take Game 1

The Chicago Bulls stunned the World Champion Celtics in game 1 in Boston. Derrick Rose shocked the world.

Rose had 36 points on 12-19 shooting and added 11 assists, 4 boards and a steal. He converted all 12 of his free throw attempts and crossed over Rajon Rondo so many times he might have vertigo. Words cannot express the game Rose played. It was simply one of the best playoff performances I have ever seen, especially since it was his first ever playoff game.

The Celtics looked lazy defensively all throughout the first half, and Ray Allen looked like he would have preferred a later start. He seemed old and creaky.

The Bulls led by as many as 11, but the champs weren’t about to quit. Surprisingly, the Bulls won despite shooting just 18% from behind the arc. Other thoughts:

How many no/yes shots did Tyrus Thomas have? Those are when you see him taking the shot you scream “No!” and then when it remarkably goes in you yell “Yes!”. I counted at least 3. He drained 3 jumpers in OT and ended up with 16 points on 8-12 shooting. He added 3 big blocks.

This is why I wanted the Bulls to draft Joakim Noah. Today he was that guy you just hate to play against. Non-stop energy, contesting shots and blocking them and battling for rebounds like he was Rodman. He ended up with 11 points, 17 rebounds and 3 blocks. He was simply a beast.

Jon Barry kept mentioning how improved Noah and Thomas’ games are. There is no denying it. Who would have thought that Noah would played the great playoff game and Brad Miller would look like a rookie? Miller had a game to forget. He was clanking jumpers, made terrible decisions with the ball and was a sieve on defense. He did manage 12 boards.

And what do we say about Vinny Del Negro now? Does he not deserve props? There weren’t many more critical of Del Negro than me. But since the trades how good has this team been? If we whale on him for the bad then we darn sure have to give him the glory when they win. Good for you, Vinny.

So the Bulls went into Boston and held the champs to 39% shooting. They didn’t flake when the heat got turned up in the 4th. They came out in OT as if it was the 1st quarter of a regular season game.

Who are these guys? Can they really win this series?

Winning against the defending champions seems like a tall order, especially since the Bulls made significant changes at the trade deadline. But if the chemistry is working, who knows?

You forgot to mention how horrendous the officiating was for both sides. I felt like the refs were trying to give the Celtics the game towards the end. We should have won that in regulation, so shame on them, but I’m glad we won. We deserved it as we played harder and wanted it more.

The Celtics are NOT the world champions. Spain is.

Fair enough. But if you add KG to the Celts, who do you think would have won–Spain or Boston?
